Every Inside Kenya Safaris trip is led by guides who've spent decades, not seasons, in the field. Our founder, Alex King'oo, set that standard himself — a kind of knowledge that cannot be acquired from a textbook or a training course, only earned through thirty years of early mornings in the bush. He's been building it since 1993, and it's the standard every guide on our team is held to.
It started three decades ago, in a safari industry that looked nothing like it does today. No smartphones for species identification, no satellite-connected vehicles, no app to tell you where the lion pride had last been spotted. You learned by going out, staying out, and paying attention — season after season, until the bush became a language you spoke fluently. That's the standard our founder, Alex King'oo, set when he started guiding in 1993 — and it's the standard every guide on our team is held to today.
Across thirty years with two of East Africa's largest operators, our founder guided guests through every major ecosystem in Kenya: the Mara in migration season, when the river crossings reduce grown adults to silence; Amboseli at first light, the elephant herds emerging from the swamps with Kilimanjaro catching the morning's first colour; the remote northern reserves of Samburu; Tsavo's red-earth vastness; and the Ngorongoro Crater floor, where 25,000 animals share a space that feels like the whole of Africa compressed into a single bowl.

Our guides hold accreditation from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association — the KPSGA — the most rigorous guiding qualification in East Africa. Earning it demands mastery of Kenya's wildlife, ecology, geography, history and cultures, examined across multiple disciplines and held to a standard most working guides never attempt. It's the standard our founder set when he earned his own certification, and one every guide on our team is measured against.
But it is not the letters that matter — it is what they represent: a commitment to the craft that goes beyond showing guests where the animals are, toward giving them the context to understand what they are seeing, and why Kenya's wild places are worth protecting.
Our guides are also deeply versed in Kenya's forty-three cultures — the Maasai and Samburu, the Kikuyu highlands, the Swahili coast. A safari with us is never just a wildlife drive. It is an education in a country far more layered than most visitors expect.
After nearly three decades guiding for others, our founder made the decision that defines Inside Kenya Safaris: to build something smaller and more deliberate, where guests build genuine relationships with the team planning their trip, rather than being one group among many in a large operation's roster.
