Elephants in front of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli

You can see Mount Kilimanjaro from Kenya without climbing it. Amboseli National Park sits just across the Tanzanian border and has some of the best views of the mountain in Africa, with elephant herds walking in front of it. A Kenya Kilimanjaro safari is a wildlife trip with the mountain as a backdrop, not a climb.

This guide explains the difference, what you will see, when the views are clearest and how to plan it.

Kilimanjaro safari or Kilimanjaro climb?

The phrase "Kilimanjaro safari" means two different things. In Tanzania, many operators sell a Kilimanjaro climb followed by a wildlife safari. In Kenya, a Kilimanjaro safari means a game-viewing trip to Amboseli, where the mountain rises across the border.

Kilimanjaro, at about 5,895 m, is Africa's highest peak. It stands in Tanzania. Amboseli, in southern Kenya, is one of the best places to see it from a vehicle or from your tent, with no trekking involved.

What Amboseli is like

Amboseli National Park covers 392 km² and is nicknamed the Home of the African Elephant for its large herds. It is a semi-arid landscape with two swamps fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro. The floating vegetation draws elephant families from the foot of the mountain each morning to forage, and they return in the late afternoon. UNESCO recognises it as a Biosphere Reserve.

Besides elephants, expect buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and hippo, and over 400 bird species around the swamps and wetlands.

When are the Kilimanjaro views clearest?

Kilimanjaro is often wrapped in cloud, so the best views are usually early in the morning and again around sunset. By midday the summit is frequently hidden. This is why we place a night inside or next to the park, so you are there at dawn.

Cloud cover varies from year to year and week to week, so no operator can promise a clear view on a given day. Ask us when you enquire and we will advise on your dates. For how the seasons affect crowds, price and weather across Kenya, see our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kenya.

How many nights do you need?

Two nights is the minimum we recommend for Amboseli. That gives you a full day of game drives and two sunrises, which improves your chances of a clear view of the mountain. One night makes the drive from Nairobi most of the trip.

Our 5-day Kilimanjaro safari spends two nights at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia, home to East Africa's largest black rhino sanctuary and the last two northern white rhinos, then two nights at Praro Amboseli Camp, a tented camp with direct views of Kilimanjaro from your tent.

What it costs

Our 5-day Kilimanjaro safari is priced per person, sharing, and falls as your group grows. For two guests it is from US$2,597 per person. A single room supplement of US$462 applies to anyone sleeping alone. Prices change with the season, and you can choose your group size on the itinerary page to see the per-person price.

It includes accommodation, the meals listed, a private safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and a KPSGA-certified guide, park fees and airport transfers. International flights, entry authorisation fees, insurance and personal expenses are not included. See what a Kenya safari costs for how camp style and season change the price.

Can you combine Amboseli with a climb?

Yes, but they are separate trips. Many travellers do the Kenya safari first and then cross to Tanzania for a climb, or the reverse. Each country has its own entry requirements. See Kenya entry requirements for US and UK travellers, and Kenya or Tanzania: how to choose.
